Re: T-Mobile HSDPA 7.2 Mbps!!!

Here's a post on an XDA-developers thread on this subject from a guy who says he works for T-Mo Corporate.

Sounds positive...just a matter of time.

Awesome. Do they plan to finish the switch by the start of 2010? Also, although technically I'm in a 3G area, I hardly(if ever) get a 3G connection around here. Will my connection be any stronger? Or am I just being optimistic?

I tried this site: mobilespeedtest.com. Unbelievable rates from good old "G"? 3X faster than my DSL service? I have to seriously question the accuracy of this test?

Yeah, I had the same thing happen:  When I used the mobilespeedtest.com site, the results I got indicated that I was getting faster speeds than DSL and even cable.  I found that I got more believable, and more consistent, results when I used the "Simple Mobile Speed Test" at http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest.  Be sure to use that specific test, rather than the others available on the same page; that's the one that's optimized for non-iPhone mobile phones.  Also, be sure to use Internet Explorer, rather than Opera, as your browser when you do the speed test.  With Opera, you're not downloading directly from the speed test site. Opera downloads the site to its servers, compress the pages, and then sends it to your phone, which is why pages load so much faster with Opera than IE.

Re: T-Mobile HSDPA 7.2 Mbps!!!

Hey ya'll - Can the WebConnect stick run at 7.2Mbps when the new HSPA networks go in?  Would it have to be a software upgrade if it can do it?  What about HSPA 21 - do I have to buy a new device when this is rolled out?

Best

Re: T-Mobile HSDPA 7.2 Mbps!!!

Yes Everything will stay the same. The difference is a faster speed. thats all.. and for the 21 HSPA, you need a new divice that supports that speed. but thats later next year that they gonna come out. so you dont have to worry about that right now.

Re: T-Mobile HSDPA 7.2 Mbps!!!

You guys are all misunderstanding the upgrade. It is an upgrade to the HSPA network already in use. There is no new network. There is no new launch. Its simply a software upgrade. You will not get 7.2mbps on your phone, I can guarantee that. You will get roughly 2-3mbps average. HSPA+ is the network that supports speeds up to 21mbps but this requires a major network upgrade and again, you will not get 21mbps on your phone. HSPA+ is in use in Philadelphia for testing purposes. These phones can't handle these speeds. I have tested my MyTouch 3G on a 20mbps connection and it maxes out at roughly 7-8mbps. Also you have to realize that when they say "Up to 7.2mbps" that means that in the perfect location and the perfect situation you will get 7.2 [basically it wont ever happen]. If you're using 3G now then you will get the new speeds. There is no charge for the upgrade nor do you have to change your plan. The HSPA 7.2 upgrades are scheduled to complete by the end of 2009. HSPA+ will be upgraded in all T-Mobile locations across 2010 so don't expect it until next year, that is unless you're in Philadelphia [jealous].

Re: T-Mobile HSDPA 7.2 Mbps!!!

All this hoopla about faster speed is for naught unless and until T-Mobile actually gets 3G speeds to those of us who live and work within the "covered" 3G areas according to their map, yet NEVER get a 3G signal!

Re: T-Mobile HSDPA 7.2 Mbps!!!

T-Mobiles network is one of the weakest, but you have to understand that the building that you're in depends a lot on the material used. If the building is made mostly of steel then you're reception is going to be significantly lower.

Re: T-Mobile HSDPA 7.2 Mbps!!!

I know. I would never base my opinion on what I can get from inside a building. I have stood outside my office AND outside my house. T-Mo coverage maps show both well within 3G coverage areas, yet no 3G. Their maps as incorrect, and need to be changed by someone outside their marketing department.
