Android 2.x?

[ Edited ]

Surfing the internet is fun, time consuming and well very educational. HOwever h=when I came across articles about Android 2.0 I began to wonder why I have not heard about this. After all as mentioned in the T-mobile banner android 1.6 was just rolled out.

So excuse me could someone please clarify  Android 2.0 vs Android 1.6? what is the difference and well if Android 2.0 for g1 phones?

Can you tell me and others who might read this about version 2.0? And when it will be available for the G1 phone?

Re: Android 2.0?

The Moto Droid and HTC Hero are the only two phones confirmed  to be getting 2.0 as of now.  There is a question as to whether the G1 is even capable of getting 2.0 because the Android 2.0 file is bigger than the amount of memory the G1 has.  As for the difference between 1.6 and 2.0 is a few new features such as Voice Guided gps on Google Maps and social network aggregation similar to MOTOBlur. There are a few thread floating around that go more in depth about 2.0 features.

Re: Android 2.0?

The Android website indicates 2.0 backward compatibility for the G1. In fact the DevOne (G1) is the phone used by Android developers and there is currently an Android 2.0 SDK available for the DevOne. Many of the new apps are using the new 2.0 Bluetooth functionality, Exchange mail support, the multi touch capability (like the iPhone), and speech synthesis - among others.

T-Mobile has little motivation to make 2.0 available for the G1 unless G1 users rise up and demand it.  I am sure they would much rather move us into new Android 2.0 phones ;-)  Open source is awesome - and the Android Community rocks.

Re: Android 2.0?

I'm sure they would too. Too bad everyone who has a G1 is still under their two year contract and isn't eligible for a new phone yet! Once my time to exchange has arrived, I'd gladly switch to a newer Android phone (but only one with a physical keyboard), but the fact that I've only had the G1 for a little over a year and they think it should already be obsolete is completely unfair since I certainly can't afford to shell out retail price for a new phone just to get the 2.0 update. T-Mo, take this post as me demanding 2.0 on the G1.

Re: Android 2.0?

WOW!   I am NOT under contract with my G1 infact I am presently under the Flexpay.

SO what I am hearing you say that the only real way a person could get the 2.0 droid is  to buy another phone??? This would be near impossable fore some since the phone cost so much ( I paid $300.00 +)

There truly has to be a better way around this indeed. I for one , and many more like me , can not afford to be dishing out $300-500 every six months for a new phone. That would be far worse than having the old land line. I usually expect to have a phone for at least 2-3 years before I even consider an upgrade. And I have only had my G1 since late July of this year.

SO what is the solution? Wait and pray that T-Mobile puts up the fix? or go without what could be a sweet upgrade?

Re: Android 2.0?

I dont think you'll have to worry. The other night I was on the phone with a T-Mobile rep and she said before they release any Android operating systems, they work with Android to make sure they can have it running on all the Android working phones. So I'm sure we will get it, but it might take sometime and patience.

2.0 UPDATE

If and when the Droid 2.0 update comes out, is T-mobile pushing this to current MT3G users? Will this update reset the phone (similar to factory settings)? Will I have to reload all my personal settings? Anybody who updated from 1.5 to 1.6 please let me know. Thanks *By the way I don't have a data plan and will be unable to activate my phone if an update is sent out and automatic. Thanks

I don't think anyone can do much more than pass along opinions and rumors as answers right now.  :smileyhappy:

Re: 2.0 UPDATE

1.5 to 1.6 didn't erase anything. It was just an upgrade. However, like the other guy said, no one knows yet for sure how 2.0 will work. I'd be surprised if it was any different. Joe

Re: 2.0 UPDATE

Well, I have some angering news, The Moto Droid currently runs android 2.0. 2.0 takes up more then 100mb of space on the device. This is horrible news. The G1 seems very unlikely to receive it. The mytouch has a 90mb system partition. Our outlooks seems grim. Tmobile needs to step it up. They need to demand 2.0 from google, and make it work on our phones. But for now, I'm concerned about google limiting the AOSP. I haven't seen any source code for eclair anywhere...

Re: 2.0 UPDATE

The motorola droid has special features that the g1 and mytouch dont, like motoblur etc. I am sure it will easily port to the mytouch, and possibly even the g1.

Re: 2.0 UPDATE

The Moto's 2.0 has VZ dedicated software on it. From what I can tell from XDA and running a very "VERY" raw and unstable version of it built from the SDK is that it will weigh in from 40MB to 80MB at most. On my My touch I had more then enough mem to install my apps if I could anyways. It can be done. Now as far as the Google Nav prolly not on the G1 unless it caches data on the SD. We will see because all we can do is speculate and start rumors. So TMOBILE Please make 2.0 avail to your loyal customers. :-) TY

Negative on the Moto Blur thing. The Droid does not have Blur. It is pretty much stock 2.0. Tmobile Cliq is the only moto with Blur as of date.

Android 2.0 Donut

Does anyone know about the potential to upgrade myTouch to Android 2.0 ("Donut") when it is released?  Is it upgradeable?

Re: Android 2.0 Donut

When will it be available? Also, is it something that we need to request or will it be an automatic download?
