I don't think its as harsh as you are saying. I work in the business. It's not about satifiying customers. Its about making money and attracting new customers. developement of new hardware and software always has its origins in existing hardware and software. We're all used to this with Windows on a PC. They pick up...where they left off.
The Go date...or Release date for software, was a few months ago. It takes at least 8 weeks for a 'final' version of the software, to be put on the 'final ' version of the hardware, to be manufactured, then shipped to the stores...and everything that goes along with that. During this time software developement has been on going...for ...whatever is next.
They haven't been sitting around waiting....they have problably been moving towards the 'next' goal of their 'next ' releases. Thats why I think 1.6 is a done deal. thats also why I think 2.0 most likely will not happen on a cliq.
If they continue Blur on other devices...it will be to insure those devices get the 2.0 experience. New devices with Blur will move into an eveolution of what they want Blur to be..on the next wave of devices. That includes making Blur work on 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, etc. And that, unfortunately, means 2.0 on the Cliq, probably won't happen.
Remember...its about market share, attracting new customers, and then retention. Retention = $200.00 to drop your contract. :-)

thats what im wondering.. if i root the phone will i be able to get a standard 2.0 OS without the motoblur? and if so, how vital is motoblur to Cliq? will you lose certain features or will it actually improve the phone?
i haven't gotten the phone yet either because of all this update bs

If your logic was correct; they would shoot themselves in the foot financially. Tmobile as well as Motorola.

If they have blur working in 2.0 on other devices it is not a great stretch to get it to work on the CLIQ/DEXT.
It is software that integrates with and works through android, and unless the CLIQ cannot take a 2.0 upgrade, there's no reason for TMO/Motorola to shoot themselves in the foot. by not offering it.
Not to mention that Google may not smile upon that kind of customer abuse, which makes them (Android) look bad.
Bottom line, the CLIQ is their first foray into the Android market. Motorola would be foolish to not support the phone beyond 1.5.
I think thoughts to the contrary are FUD.

Why does this thread state that it is "solved" when there is no definitive answer to if the Cliq is getting the 2.0 update or not. Frankly, I can't wait to get an update. There's a few quirks that are very frustrating. I gave up a 1.6 MyTouch for the Cliq. I love the device for what it could be but, I'm about to take it back and get another MyTouch. They need to stop pointing fingers and make an annoucement. Also on a sidenote, why did I have to disable java script to post this from the Cliq? Not good when you can't use your own phone on the carrier's website.
I'm responding to you from my Cliq without turning off javascript. You just have to click "Edit as HTML" button in the upper right corner of the text window first. Then you can even add a "quote". I know it's a bit of a pain, but it works.

Thanks Allen. I tried that originally but, I had dolphin browser as my default and it kept taking me to a blank page. Reset to default browser and now it works. You are right though, it is kinda pain to hit edit as HTML button. But, I can live with it.

i hope moto didnt treat the cliq as the red headed step child and devote all the attention towards the droid, that would be unfair to many.
ill +1 to google stepping in since itll make android look bad, and since the do have a say with the droid since their name is on it

I just received this response from Motorola:
"The Droid that was released with Verizon is 2.0. But at this moment we cannot confirm when an upgrade will be available for the Cliq. However the phone is ready to receive software upgrades to both the Google Android OS, and the Moto Blur interface, therefore upgrades are being planned, but we don't have a release schedule, or confirmation up to which Android version it's going to upgrade."

I would rather motorola get the update RIGHT instead of rushing it. I feel 1.6 was rushed to the g1 and ALOT of people had problems with it because developers didn't have a chance to update their apps. As for everyone whining about no information, the last time t-mobile tried to make an announcement (update to cupcake aka firmware 1.5) and there was a glitch that pushed the release back everyone screamed bloody murder and said that they shouldn't have said anything till it was completely ready. In this case they are damned if they do and damned if they don't
Better to say that if the update goes on schedule it will be sometime by after 11/xx/2009 so people at least know its coming.
Sure, they scream when it's late, but they scream more when they feel it isn't coming at all, and some people are spreading FUD about it never being released.

Motorola's answer base now says this, yeah they've changed it again, it sounds a bit more assuring but still not what I'm looking for.
Motorola regularly updates software for in-warranty phones to improve performance. Android phones will receive software updates as needed. What is included in the software updates will be determined based on the requirements of the individual device.

I hope Moto devs are smart.
Porting vanilla 2.0 to Arm11 should not be hard except for performance optimizations. Of course that's the 'with Google' version everyone is developing against.
Blur is UI, the hardware is the same as most of the other android phones: Moto should just give CLIQ users the option to upgrade to 2.0 *with Google* and then supply a Blur update when it's polished. Then users can take advantage of 2.0, while moto can spend time polsihing blur for 2.0. Make it an option since some users that love Blur can stay with 1.5 and others can take advantage of the newer features. I know there's a "with Google" tax involved, but they should do it to show how flexible the OS is and really create a following for their Android devices. HTC should do the same! Sort of like putting Fedora 11 on your computer (to get the latest features) and then upgrading to a hardened RedHat EL 6 when it's ready.
I'm sure you can easily put vanilla 2.0 on it straight on it. The problem is likely 2.0 was built for Droid (Cortex A8) and needs a quick port to Arm11, which then, the vanilla version would work on any other andoird device.
