No the g1 does not send the IM's thru text messages. It is sent thru the data plan. Now if you're using the text IM fowarding from msn and aim or whatever IM then yes they would be using the text plan.
This is incorrect. It has been confirmed on SEVERAL websites that the G1 uses data services for Gtalk, but the AIM/MSN/Yahoo IM applications built into the initial build are all SMS based. This most likely explains why the Gtalk application works virtually flawlessly, while the others all have issues.

I have worked around this problem. You can hook up a relay to message your AIM clients through the Google talk. Instructions for doing this here:

It works great with the G1. You just need to leave yourself signed in on the desktop so it can relay the messages.

No you are incorrect. MSN/AIM/YAHOO have an option where you can UTILIZE the text options and sign in on your phone with just your cell number. They will then forward your messages to TEXT. That will then use the Texting but fortunately they all 3 use the data plan. Please if you have "confirmation" from various sites provide the links then and not just a "i heard and read from various sites". The reason they use the DATA plan is because I took the sim card out and connected wirelessly. When phone booted up the first thing all 4 messengers did was log on. I told someone to send me a message and i received the message just fine. The messengers all worked correctly (still had the little bugs everyone is getting.). The reason i know it uses the DATA plan is because those 3 messengers can forward to TEXT ONLY if you select that option and sign in with your cellphone number thru the IM on your PC.
If you are also going to provide the site it says "The G1 uses them as text plan", don't provide any blogs as they are only opinion based thoughts and do not confirm anything.

Sorry if this was covered already. I didn't have the time to read through all 4 pages.
Improvements:
-Some type of notification that a buddy has logged on or logged off. Similar to the SK3 AIM where there would be the audible door opening (log on) and door closing (log off), as well as a visual bubble that popped up saying "[Screen Name] has logged on/off".

I think the aim needs to be more like the sidekick. The fact you cant put on a normal away mssg is rather annoying. The buddy list also takes a long time to load (even when connected to wifi) if you can even get i to load. Most of the time it likes to just sit there and say you have noone online, or it will just continue saying the only people online are the ones when you signed on and not botther telling u about the ones that signed on or off.
Please can we get the sidekick aim on here, or perhaps someone make a application for it ? =)

The following things need an update for AIM asap:
1. Custom Away message
2. The structure of the buddylist
3. A notification of who signs on and who signs off
4. Icon availability
5. The ability to view other people's away without having the need to IM them.
I am very disappointed with the way AIM came out for the G1.
