New Payment Option for Android Market Purchases

[ Edited ]

UPDATED 12/11/09

Beginning December 9th, customers on post-paid accounts with devices running Android 1.6, such as the T-Mobile G1 and T-Mobile myTouch 3G, will begin to receive an update to the Android Market application to allow for purchases to be charged directly to their T-Mobile account.  This allows customers to purchase paid applications without entering credit card information.  If you are one of these customers here are some details of the change:

  • The Market application update will be invisible to you.  No steps are necessary to receive the update!
  • To ensure that the update is received successfully by all users T-Mobile and Google will stagger the update.  You should expect to have the Market update and be able to make a T-Mobile account purchase by early January 2010 or earlier.
  • Once you receive the update you will be able to purchase paid applications using your credit card or your T-Mobile account.
  • Reminder: Any applications uninstalled within 24 hours will NOT be charged to your T-Mobile account or credit card.

Note: At this time, the Motorola CLIQ and Samsung Behold II, which currently operate on Android 1.5, will continue to require customers to enter their credit card information to purchase paid applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know that I received the update

Since the update is invisible you will not be proactively advised that you have received the update. You can check your Android Market version using the following procedure:

  1. Access Settings.
  2. Click Applications.
  3. Click Manage Applications.
  4. Scroll to and click the Market application.
  5. Verify that the Market version is greater than 1660.

Can I get the update early

The Market update will be released in phases with all targeted subscribers receiving the update by early January 2010.  T-Mobile does not have the ability to deliver the update on demand.  The Market application will request an update periodically when it is launched to ensure that you have the most up to date version.  In order to guarantee that your Market application is requesting updates always back out of the market when you are finished using it.

Why can’t I purchase an application that’s in Euros or Pounds?

You can still purchase an application that is not in US Dollars but you need to use a credit card.  At this time, T-Mobile can only allow for this payment option if the application developer has set a price in US dollars.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions

"In order to guarantee that your Market application is requesting updates always close the market when you are finished using it." How do I "close" the market when finished? I didn't think this was possible with android software. Thanks for help in advance~ Julie

Re: Mrket update for carrier billing

Nope. Not yet. Still Waiting.

My market version is 1660, and I misread the original post where it said that it had to be higher than 1660. I got so excited and was about to go app crazy. Lol.

Oh well, hopefully very soon.

Re: New Payment Option for Android Market Purchases

Does this only apply to Google Experience phones (i.e., G1, MT3G)? I'm assuming so since the CLIQ and Behold 2 are 1.5 devices the old inferior market, thus excluded from Android core app updates. On a side note, I'm tech savvy yet cannot find the Market version on the CLIQ... and I gave up after a checking a few different places.

New Payment Option for Android Market Purchases

So what gives? Yesterday my app updated from v1620 to v1660, which is NOT the version for account billing. Why not update directly to the account billing version, why stop short like this? Am I missing something?

New Payment Option for Android Market Purchases

This is exactly what I have as well. Supposedly, the account billing version is any version higher than v.1660, which makes no sense why during this update rollout they would update to 1660 instead of the correct version for the feature. It makes no sense either that they won't tell us the actual version number of the appropriate update, instead of telling us what version it isn't.

Re: New Payment Option for Android Market Purchases

From what I have read the new version will be version 1670.

I also read that T-Mobile and Google are staggering the updates. For some reason there is no way to update everyone's market at once.

The update from 1620 to 1660 why there is the T-Mobile apps tab in the market.

All T-Mobile users should receive the update by early January of next year.

Again, this is all info that I have read from various blogs and forums.

Also, don't waste your time calling T-Mobile support, because it seems like no one has even heard about the update to the market.

So I guess we all just have to wait and see.

Re: Mrket update for carrier billing

Hmm... second post from mod states that we should look for a version GREATER than 1660. So those who are receiving 1660 are just getting their phones updated. Seems like T-Mobile is not ready to release the new version. As for the version number of the updated Market app, it will probably depend on the test results (i.e. how many updates past 1660 to reach gold?).

Re: Mrket update for carrier billing

A t-mobile tab is costing us 1.5mb of space that re-installs itself if we try to uninstall it????? Communist

Re: Mrket update for carrier billing

I was talking to T-Mobile last night and was told that alot of the articles coming from the moderators such as: Mrket update for carrier billing, are fake. They even had their "Superiors" look at it and said that it was impossible, that the only way to buy apps would be through google check out and credit card. I don't know who to believe, but i would not keep my hopes up.
