Re: What happened to my contacts

if you had your contacts on your SIM card from a previous phone, you have to sync them manually. do this by going to 'contacts'....press the menu button...press 'settings'...then 'SIM contacts importer'...then menu again, 'import all'. if you didn't have your contacts on a SIM card, then i'm sorry i don't know how to help...

I had the same problem. In the contacts screen click the menu button and then check off "sync my contacts".

Re: What happened to my contacts

I saved my contacts to the SIM from my T-Mobile MDA. I put that SIM into my new G1, but contacts were not there. How do I get to the 'SIM contacts importer" in Settings to import my contacts? I dont see that option.

Open contacts, hit menu, select settings, sim contacts importer is right there.

Did you check online, in the gmail contacts?  Your contacts are probably there.Let me know if they are not, cause I am trying to piece this together.

I agree it is totally stupid for it to delete them from your phone, after syncing to your gmail account.

I have figure out a workaround I think.  (atleast, this works, if you have your contacts sync with online, but only sync specific groups sync from your gmail, instead of specifying "all contact")

I think I got it figured out. And it is really bad design if you ask me.

I had/have this problem with contacts added to my phone disappearing.

I only have like 2 groups synced with gmail contacts, because I have a stupidly large ammout of gmail contacts, and I dont want them all synced with my phone.

So when I make a new contact, it has no group. When it syncs, it does add the said contact to gmail account, but then removes it from the phone, because its not in a group of contacts I have chosen to sync.

There is a "Starred in Android" group that is automatically created both places. (which does not automatically always sync**)

Seems like there should automatically be a "Android Contacts" group, so that any contact made on the phone, is automatically put in that group, and that group is ALWAYS synced (as long as you are syncing with online). That would be super simple, and would prevent this annoying behavior.

As it is, I guess I am going to manually add "Starred in Android" group to my sync, and I'll just have to remeber that if I do not star new contacts, they will disappear from my phone.

**(very non-intuitive -- in what situation exactly, is someone NOT going to want "Starred in Android" contacts, synced on their phone, and thus dropped from their phones contacts?!)

Re: What happened to my contacts

It prob happened right after you installed your update because thats what happened to me.  Your going to have to go to (Setting>Data Syn> then check all your boxes till all the circular syn icons dissapear) thennn uncheck them to save the battery life :robotvery-happy:
