Updates to Android Market will require you to re-download apps

[ Edited ]

Hey all,

Looks like an update to the Andoid Market is coming on the 20th.  I'm not aware of the changes exactly, but it will require that you re-download any applications you may have downloaded before that point.  Remember, the applications are free for the time being so there's no risk of being charged for the downloads.  I just wanted you to be aware.

Another item to note: this will only impact those who already have the G1 and download apps before the updates on the 20th.  Most customers will receive their devices after that date and will not be impacted.

TMo_Ryan,

You should not have to make a list.  They still should be in your my downloads in the market.  I love this device.

Re: Updates to Android Market will require you to re-download apps

Well, I made a list already but that will help me actually figure out what i do and don't like. Glad that I only need to redownload them. EDGE service is actually very snappy. I am very interested in getting into 3G coverage and seeing what this puppy can do.

Re: Updates to Android Market will require you to re-download apps

What if the phone was already shipped and I receive on Oct 21? Do I still have to re-download apps, or will this feature be uploaded automatically?

Re: Updates to Android Market will require you to re-download apps

The Market is online and I believe the change is occuring on the back-end with the store and applications themselves.  The update should be invisible to most folks.  If you haven't downloaded anything (which you can't without a device) when the update occurs, you won't even notice.  For others who have, we should have to redownload the apps.

Re: Updates to Android Market will require you to re-download apps

I have a question.

When you say "the applications are free for the time being"... do you mean that we can download ALL apps. for free now, but once the Android Market is updated to allow developers to charge, then the apps we currently have (or some of them) may no longer work and require payment, or are all programs currently on Android Market free now, and will forever remain free?

Hope my question is clear... just wondering.

Thanks!

Don't quote me at 100% for this but the apps are free for the first 90 days after launch, meaning if you downloaded it now then its in there for you forever for free. It's like a virtual launch party. Newer versions, newer apps, etc that come out after that date may or may not be charged.
I would look to the linux model on this. There are a lot of programs that are free for linux or have a "community" version but then there is also a paid support model or pro version too.

Re: Updates to Android Market will require you to re-download apps

Ok, so it looks like the update (or some of it) has happened. Alot of my apps that I DL'd prior to last night are still on the phone and still functioning. I have downloaded the new Myspace Mobile app as well as Imeem and i'm extremely impressed with the functionability of both of these. However there are quite a few less apps than there was before the "update", after reviewing the developer community forum looks like there's alot more coming they just haven't completely finished updating the market. All i'm saying is if they delete my pac-man they better give it back, :smileyhappy:.

Google removes applications just before launch

[ Edited ]

As people start receiving their pre-ordered T-Mobile G1 phones, they are going to be very disappointed to find that the 50+ applications that were reported in the Android Market have now been striped down to only 13. Many of the top applications that have been reviewed already will not be there.
