G1 my main problem

My main problem is the phone itself.  I bought the phone knowing it would have tons of software issues at least for the first 3-6 months.  So I’m not going to throw out any complaints about that.  But as far as the phone goes, it feels like a piece of cheap plastic.  The phone creaks and makes cracking noises when opening and during normal handling.  Knowing that I would be returning mine, as well as my girlfriends, I thought I’d sit around and open and close the phone.  I don’t know exactly how many times I did this, but it was while I was watching TV for an hour and a half or so.  Guess what, the screen gets loose over time.  Now it feels quite wobbly.   All and all, I’m quite unsatisfied with the phone T-mobile, Google, and HTC chose.   I would have much rather the android platform would have been released on the HTC touch.  I would have been willing to pay more for something that felt less cheap.

Re: G1 my main problem

I would agree that G1 is not the best looking phone aesthetically and comparing to my iPhone feels less sturdy (or cheaply made depending how you look at it).

I also think that the phones that get loose quickly are defective. I don't have any phone issues or software issues to complain about and get good 3G coverage so far.

As far as the looks, yes it could be made to look better but I don't sit and look at my phone. Its kinda shallow I think to do that. Even when I talk on it use bluetooth so it sits in my pocket. I guess for people who like to show the phone to their friends and how cute it looks, iPhone is better choice. Yes I can admit that when the iPhone came out I did just that...not with G1 though lol. I guess we all can be shalow.

Re: G1 my main problem

I opened and closed my phone the same way for quite a while before I decided to shave the mating edge of the phone down. After doing this I will say that the phone feels much more solid. This is obviously not something a customer should have to do but considering the enjoyment I have already gotten from this phone, I would say that it was well worth it.

Re: G1 my main problem

There has been talk on the board about it. The screens mating edge to the actual phone base is whats causing the noise.

If you look closely, when you open the phone you can actually see where the 2 surfaces are rubbing. Many have had success with shaving the upper right corner of the phone base surface where a small nub is located, probably there to prevent this from happening in the first place. I took off more from the side of the screen as well which is easily accessed when the phone is held open, none of it is visible. I scraped it with a very small stiff knife edge

There is no more noise from the phone, the effort involved is only a few minutes. I have never found another phone to be more useful, and after clearing this up it has become even more enjoyable.
